“My child has lost interest in other activities. He is only interested in his smartphone and has been on it all day long”.

Yes, the screen and the Internet are addictive.

You need to shape the boundaries with the screen.

Since screen time has been limited, you need to find the right activities so that your child can spend their time.

Another challenge parents face is they think their children are not interested in other activities despite the activities in front of them.

Here is the reality.

Our behavior is not defined by the objects in the environment but by our relationship with them.

You can place a lot of books in front of your children, but if your child hates reading, this is not going to work.

For example, Suen and Kate like to read books so it is kind of easy to set the environment for them.

On the other hand, Wei doesn’t like to read. Wei likes Spiderman, Batman, Ninja Turtle, and so on.

Our relationship with the smartphone and other habits

So, I brought Wei to the bookstore to select his favorite characters’ books and there, he picked up some reading habits.

So, you see, it is not just the cue. It is the relationship with the cue.

Suen likes reading so it is easy for her to pick up books.

Wei likes Spiderman and therefore he picks up the books to learn more about Spiderman.

Therefore, stop thinking about your environment as filled with objects.

Start thinking about it as filled with relationships.

Try this out and let me know if this works for you.

P.S. If you find your children are struggling with excessive screen time or overindulgence in their online world, and you would like to have some tips or strategies to raise children in this digital era, comment #screentime.

I have been busy and taking a step back from webinars.

However, screen addiction is a common concern among children and teenagers and therefore, I am opening 5 slots of 15-minute free consultation calls per week.
